Discover The Casements: John D. Rockefeller's Winter Retreat
Where did the richest man in America spend his winters in the early 1900s? In Ormond Beach, Florida — just 14 miles south of the Beach Front Motel. The Casements and Rockefeller Gardens offer a fascinating glimpse into the past while serving as vibrant cultural hubs today. Built in 1913, The Casements is a 9,000-square-foot historical mansion on the shore of the Halifax River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and just two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. This magnificent home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was once the winter residence of American oil magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller.
John D. Rockefeller purchased The Casements in 1918. Although it was a modest home compared to his immense wealth, Rockefeller chose it for its serene environment, believing that the sea air and daily rounds of golf would contribute to his longevity. Indeed, he lived to the age of 97, passing away peacefully in his sleep within the mansion. During his time there, Rockefeller entertained numerous notable figures, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. One of the most anticipated events each year was the Christmas party he hosted for friends, a tradition that continues today thanks to The Casements Guild.
The name "The Casements" derives from the large hand-cut casement windows that grace the mansion. After Rockefeller's death, the mansion saw various uses, including serving as a junior college, a preparatory school for girls and a home for the elderly. Today, it is owned by the City of Ormond Beach and has functioned as the community's cultural center for the past 30 years. Visitors are welcome for tours Monday through Saturday, where they can learn about the mansion's rich history and explore the beautiful grounds. The Casements also hosts special events, including gallery exhibits, and offers a variety of classes in fitness, culinary arts, languages and art.
Adjacent to The Casements are the beautifully restored Rockefeller Gardens. These two-acre gardens along the Halifax riverfront were developed to Rockefeller's specifications by a Swedish landscape designer. The gardens feature citrus trees, a grand promenade, streams, small bridges and a variety of seasonal flower displays throughout the year. Extensive renovations were completed in 2009, revitalizing the gardens to their former glory.
The promenade along the river invites visitors to stroll or take their daily exercise, while the outdoor stage hosts weddings and free movies on the first Friday of each month. A recent addition to the water pond is a fountain featuring a sculpture of a silver king tarpon, enhancing the garden's allure.
Today, more than 100 years since it was built, The Casements continues to be a place of learning, celebration and community, ensuring that Rockefeller's legacy endures for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. Its location along the Intracoastal Waterway provides stunning views of the Halifax River and easy access to the vibrant cultural and recreational activities of Ormond Beach. During your next stay with us at the Beach Front Motel, make the short 20-minute trip south to explore this historical gem and immerse yourself in the rich heritage and serene beauty of The Casements and Rockefeller Gardens.
